World-leading biosecurity

Fruit flies – exotic pests

Biosecurity is the exclusion, eradication or effective management of risks posed by pests and diseases to the economy, environment and human health.

Our research focuses on:

  • developing state-of-the-art DNA barcoding technology to detect and rapidly identify biological threats at New Zealand's border

  • developing tracing techniques and forensic methods to determine the origin and history of intercepted specimens

  • developing weed risk-assessment tools and understanding their invasive processes

  • developing new mathematical models and tools to predict how weeds and insect pest species might invade and spread under different climates.

Based on discovery and innovation, we provide new, creative and integrative science for biosecurity.

Research is carried out under the guidance of Theme Leaders Professor Philip Hulme, Lincoln University, and Professor Stephen Goldson, AgResearch.
