Dr Jürgen Köhl
Dr Jürgen Köhl is senior plant pathologist at Plant Research International (PRI), which is part of Wageningen University and Research Center (WUR) in The Netherlands. PRI is a private not-for-profit research institute specializing in strategic and applied research for industry and public institutions by integrating knowledge on crop protection, crop ecology, agricultural systems, genetics and reproduction. The research of the business unit Biointeractions and Plant Health of PRI focuses on plant/pathogen and microbial interactions.
Dr Köhl leads a research group working on the epidemiology of fungal leaf and fruit diseases in vegetable and fruit crops, as well as mycotoxin producing pathogens in cereals including maize. He studies the dynamics of pathogen populations in crops and crop residues and is especially interested in microbial interactions between pathogens and naturally occurring antagonists. This work has resulted in the development of several biological control systems.
Dr Köhl has completed projects at national and European Union level to develop specific solutions for organic farming systems. He co-ordinated the major EU-projects BIOSPORSUPPRESS and REPCO, and was RTD beneficiary in various (inter)national projects (e.g. ENDURE and MycoRed). He has been a member of organizing committees of several international scientific conferences. He is also member of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bonn, Germany where he is private lecturer (equivalent to Assoc Professor).
Dr Köhl has a PhD in plant pathology from the Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany, where he did research on the ecology of antagonistic Trichoderma species. He attained his habilitation including the venia legendi at the Institute of Crop Science and Resource Conservation, INRES, of the University of Bonn. His habilitation thesis was on the biological control of Botrytis spp. by the antagonistic fungus Ulocladium atrum.
