Maori bioprotection

E nga iwi o nga hau e wha, nau mai haere mai

[To all the people of the four winds welcome!]

Work within the Maori Bioprotection Theme acknowledges traditional Maori knowledge and assists in its inclusion in contemporary science.

Research in this theme focuses on:

  • understanding concepts, particularly tikanga and matauranga, that underpin Maori approaches to agricultural activity

  • facilitating research on Maori bioprotection issues

  • developing technologies to better meet the contemporary needs of Maori growers.

The key researcher in this theme is Dr Nick Roskruge (Atiawa, Ngati Tama -Taranaki). Maori Research & Development Co-ordinator Melanie Mark-Shadbolt (Ngäti Kahungunu, Ngäti Porou, Te Äti Awa, Ngäti Raukawa) profiles the Centre to Maori communities and agencies and establishes collaborations with these groups.

The Maori Theme has strong links with our Ecosystems Services programme.
