  Matthew's research career has focused on management of plant diseases caused by fungi.

  He has extensive experience in host-pathogen interactions, in soil-borne diseases and biosecurity, as well as on diseases of arable crops in general. In 2005, Matthew was the inaugural FAR Researcher of the Year, in recognition of his contribution to arable crop research in New Zealand.

  Throughout his career, Matthew has worked with undergraduate and post-graduate students, having acted as associate supervisor for several PhD students and taught several plant pathology courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
