Academic and Professional Background
- Background:
Dr Cox gained his B.Sc. (Hons) in Biochemistry, First Class and Ph.D. in Population Genetics from Otago University. He worked at the University of Oslo, University of Cambridge, Santa Fe Institute and University of Arizona before returning to New Zealand to take up his current position at Massey University in 2009.
- Research:
Dr Murray Cox works in the area of computational biology: the interface between biology, statistics and computer science. His research addresses fundamental questions in contemporary population genomics with a particular interest in modeling genome dynamics. He develops computational methods for genome analysis and designs and implements novel algorithms and statistics, largely in the fields of coalescent theory, demographic inference and systems biology. He is currently applying these tools to a series of ongoing projects in the Bio-Protection Research Centre and other research groups.
