Dr Sami Aikio's research focuses on developing new methods to analyse the establishment and spread of weeds in New Zealand using collection data from sources such as herbaria.
The TEC-funded Post-doctoral Fellow started working for the centre in April 2008, under the guidance of Professors Philip Hulme and Richard Duncan. Sami mainly works with models and data analysis using the Matlab-software.
Sami started his career at the University of Oulu, Finland, where he did his MSc thesis in 1996 and PhD in 2000.
He then moved to the University of Helsinki, Finland, to work as a Post-doctoral Fellow for Professors Esa Ranta and Veijo Kaitala, modelling various questions in the general theme of life-history ecology and population dynamics. The most recent project (2004-2007) was the ecological risk analysis for genetically modified organisms.
