A fantastic opportunity is available for an experienced Technician to join our multi-disciplined Ecology and Environment Research Group. The primary responsibility of this role is to provide technical support for Molecular Forest Pathology-related research projects and forest health Diagnostics Services based at our Rotorua campus. Drawing from your excellent technical and organisational skills you will undertake research and diagnostics in the laboratory, field, and nursery. You will follow sampling protocols, ensuring safe practices are followed, while maintaining the integrity of the research.

The Role
A fantastic opportunity is available for an experienced Technician to join our multi-disciplined Ecology and Environment Research Group. The primary responsibility of this role is to provide technical support for Molecular Forest Pathology-related research projects and forest health Diagnostics Services based at our Rotorua campus. Drawing from your excellent technical and organisational skills you will undertake research and diagnostics in the laboratory, field, and nursery. You will follow sampling protocols, ensuring safe practices are followed, while maintaining the integrity of the research.
You will provide molecular biology technical support to various projects across Scion’s three Impact Areas. You will work with project leaders, scientists, and other technical staff, to efficiently deliver research and accurately record and report results. This role will also see you assisting with day-to-day running of the laboratory by maintaining stock, equipment, and ordering supplies. Furthermore, your proven experience in the application and troubleshooting of molecular biology methods and techniques will make you the perfect addition to the Pathogen Ecology and Control Team.
Requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualification (MSc or BSc with laboratory experience in related fields)
- Experience with PCR, real-time PCR and DNA sequencing (including qPCR data analysis and DNA sequence analysis)
- Excellent microbiological skills, including routine growth, maintenance of cultures and aseptic technique
- Competency in purification and quantification of nucleic acids
- Experience handling environmental samples, including soil and plant is advantageous
- Self-motivated with the capability to work independently and within teams
