Project Details
What is this programme about?
The Te Māhuri Scholarship is a two-week summer programme for secondary school students in Canterbury who are curious about the world around them with an interest in science.
Hosted and supported by Bioprotection Aotearoa at Lincoln University, students get the chance to work alongside real scientists, researchers and mentors from neighbouring Science institutes. Through hands-on activities like field trips, lab experiments, and real research projects, students explore topics such as plants, insects, the environment, and climate change, while also learning how Mātauranga Māori and science can work together. It’s a fun, inspiring experience that shows what science looks like beyond the classroom and helps students imagine future pathways in science and research.
Why is this scholarship important?
Rather than learning only from books or classrooms, students are immersed in real science environments, working alongside researchers, going into the field, using labs, and contributing to real projects. This makes science feel:
• real and achievable
• relevant to everyday life and the environment around them
• connected to real careers and role models
Alongside this, a powerful added layer is the integration of Mātauranga Māori with science, which helps rangatahi (especially Māori and Pasifika students) see themselves, their culture, and their knowledge systems reflected and valued in scientific spaces.
Outcomes of the Te Māhuri Scholarship
Hands-on science experience
Students gain real-world experience through lab work, field trips, and research projects, helping them understand how science works beyond textbooks and classrooms.
Stronger connection to the environment
Participants build knowledge about plants, insects, climate change, and ecosystems, growing awareness and care for the natural world of Aotearoa.
Understanding both Mātauranga Māori and science
Students learn how Indigenous knowledge and modern science can work together to solve real environmental challenges.
Inspiration for future pathways
The programme helps students see themselves in science, research, and environmental careers, building confidence and opening doors to future study and work opportunities.
