What is this programme about?

Lab in a Box brings big science into a small space — transforming a shipping container into a mobile laboratory. Inside, hands-on experiments and interactive displays spark curiosity and connect science to real-world environmental challenges.

From August to November 2025, Bioprotection Aotearoa is hosting Lab in a Box on the grounds of the Bioeconomy Science Institute, Lincoln. This is a rare opportunity to bring your group to explore how science helps safeguard our environment and productive landscapes for future generations.

What To Expect

Step inside the 20-foot mobile lab to explore hands-on experiments and activities that link to pests, diseases, and weeds, and discover how science helps protect Aotearoa’s productive landscapes for generations to come.

Your visit includes:

  • Insects and Creepy Crawlies | Who’s hiding under the leaves and rocks? Come and find out with magnifiers and bug traps! Which one is which?  What spider is this?
  • Weeds vs Natives | Can you tell the difference? Learn how to identify common weeds and discover the special qualities of native plants.
  • Tree Detectives | Use your senses to discover which native trees live near your school – learn their names and find out their traditional uses or benefits.
  • Biocreativity Zone | Design your own species – what would live here if you were the kaitiaki?
  • Tech Zone | Virtual Reality within your Use apps like iNaturalist to help identify and record your discoveries!
