I am a human geographer interested in nature-society relations, the politics of science, and environmental governance. My research focuses on knowledge production and decision making related to the environment, and addresses topics ranging across freshwater science, environmental policy, and conservation.

I use qualitative social science methods including interviews, document analysis, participant observation, and action research, as well as quantitative social science surveys. My research aims to help protect and enhance people’s connections with the environment, and to help build institutions of science and policy that are effective, inclusive, and reflexive.

Much of my work is transdisciplinary, generating knowledge to pursue practical goals that have been developed through dialogue with iwi and community partners. I contribute to applied and blue skies research projects, including co-leading Fish Futures (2021-26), an Endeavour-funded research programme focused on strengthening people’s connections with freshwater fish
